The Selangor government has ordered an immediate halt to all development work in Puncak Alam, Kuala Selangor, while flood mitigation plans and environmental impact are reassessed.
Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said the public works department would temporarily close Jalan Batu Arang in Rawang to repair a collapsed bank.
He said flood mitigation work, especially in higher-risk areas, must be sped up instead of following normal schedules, as rain is expected almost every day. “We are facing a climate change crisis, and our flood mitigation efforts must match current challenges to prevent harm to the public,” he said in a statement on Friday.
Amirudin said the state would increase aid for flood victims at evacuation centres and speed up house repairs and cleaning work. Aid of up to RM1,500 from Nadma and the state government will be channelled to victims as repairs proceed.
Early warnings will also be given to road users in areas where water levels may rise, while the drainage and irrigation department carries out immediate water diversion work, he said.
Amirudin acknowledged that floods caused by rain in several areas had disrupted people’s daily lives, especially those commuting to work and fetching children from school.
Update: The public works department said a section of the Rawang-Kuala Selangor road (B27) has been fully closed after a landslide following heavy rain in Gombak caused part of the road structure to collapse. A diversion route for light vehicles has been provided.
