The families of the 54 Malaysians who died in the Nepal-Tibet flood tragedy in August will each receive a one-off payment of RM10,000.

Human Resources Minister R Ramanan said the payment, to be made through the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), was decided by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at Friday’s Cabinet meeting.

He said the money would be paid according to an order of priority, with spouses first, followed by parents and then children, and that a list would be issued.

Ramanan said officials had been told to obtain the details from the finance ministry and to contact the victims’ next of kin soon.

The flood and debris flow on Aug 26 was triggered by a glacial ice and rock avalanche in the upper catchment of the Lhende Khola in Tibet. A total of 1,451 people have been reported killed, while about 5,700 people, including more than 600 foreign nationals, remain missing.
