Perikatan Nasional (PN) has applied to the High Court for leave to begin contempt proceedings against Registrar of Societies (RoS) director-general Zulfikar Ahmad.

The application was filed by PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan and four others, naming Zulfikar as the sole respondent. Lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali, acting for the coalition, confirmed the filing.

In its grounds, PN alleges the RoS deliberately acted to pre-empt the court by deregistering the coalition while its judicial review and stay applications were still pending, with the aim of making its legal challenge academic and futile.

PN filed the judicial review on 5 October, seeking to quash a 23 September notice suspending its activities indefinitely and a 22 September show-cause notice, and a declaration that both were void. The High Court granted leave on 13 October, and the RoS deregistered the coalition a week later.

On 22 October, the High Court stayed the deregistration, allowing PN to contest the Melaka state election under its own logo.

Case management for the contempt application has been fixed in chambers on 12 November.
