Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has told the Dewan Rakyat there is no attempt to cover up the death of a detainee held at the Cheras district police headquarters lockup, and that the Criminal Investigation Department has taken over the case.
Noorizwan Zulkefly was taken to Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz in Cheras on 30 September and pronounced dead at 1.52am on 1 October. He had been held over investigations under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the Penal Code.
Speaking on 27 October, Saifuddin said the death is being investigated under the Penal Code, that he would personally share any developments, and that the ministry would not tolerate wrongdoing, including by enforcement personnel.
RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) sought an explanation, citing post-mortem findings that allegedly showed six fractured ribs, a spinal injury and bleeding in the brain and intestines.
Ramkarpal Singh (PH-Bukit Gelugor) raised the investigation of three lawyers involved in the case. Saifuddin said he would look into it, adding that being a lawyer does not exempt anyone from investigation.
Noorizwan’s family marched from the National Monument to Parliament to hand over a memorandum seeking justice and calling for the setting up of an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission.
