Police are investigating a viral video alleging that two policemen in Penang took money from a group of people after stopping their car.

Several videos circulating on social media show the two officers stopping a car carrying several people and checking them. The person recording the video alleged that the officers had taken money from the group.

George Town police chief Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the two personnel, from a mobile patrol unit, were carrying out enforcement duties at Puncak Erskine, Jalan Fettes, in Tanjung Tokong.

He said the officer involved had lodged a police report denying the allegation of corruption during the inspection, and that police were conducting a thorough investigation into the incident shown in the video.

The investigation will also look into whether the personnel involved complied with procedures and disciplinary regulations, he said in a statement on Friday night.

He urged witnesses and anyone with information on the incident to contact the George Town district police headquarters.
