The Election Commission (EC) has fixed Dec 12 as polling day for the Sarawak state election.

EC chairman Ramlan Harun said nominations would be held on Nov 28, while early voting would take place on Dec 8.

The dates were announced on Friday after a special meeting of the commission. The Sarawak legislative assembly was dissolved on Oct 26, and under the Sarawak Constitution a state election must be held within 60 days of the assembly’s dissolution.

This will be Sarawak’s 13th state election. At the last one, in December 2021, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) won 76 of the 82 seats, while Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) won four and DAP two.

PSB was later dissolved, with its leaders and members joining the Progressive Democratic Party, a GPS component.

Update: Speaking at a press conference in Kuching, Ramlan said 2,058,781 people are eligible to vote in the election, comprising 2,034,373 ordinary voters, 13,575 military personnel and their spouses, and 10,833 police and General Operations Force personnel and their spouses. The EC has appointed 82 election managers and 305 assistant election managers, and will set up 82 campaign enforcement teams, including representatives of the police, local authorities and candidates, to monitor campaigning.
