Flash floods hit the Puncak Alam campus of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in Selangor after heavy rain on Thursday afternoon, with rising water disrupting traffic.
Videos shared by students on social media showed the campus bus waiting area flooded up to calf level, muddy water spilling onto a road, and floodwaters in an area believed to be near the Faculty of Built Environment.
UiTM Selangor branch rector Ahmad Taufek Abdul Rahman said an inspection found that the continuous rain had sent too much water through the drainage system, causing the concrete beam structure of the drains to give way and water to overflow into nearby areas.
He said all 16 water retention ponds on the campus were working properly, and that conditions on campus had returned to normal by the evening.
Selangor fire and rescue department operations assistant director Ashrul Riezal Asbar said floodwaters at the UiTM Puncak Alam kindergarten had receded by the time firefighters arrived at 5.26pm.
He said nearby Taman Seri Alam was also hit by flash floods caused by the heavy rain and an overflowing retention pond, with water about 0.3m deep. Water of a similar depth entered several homes in Kampung Johan Setia, but no one was evacuated.
